This paper explores the anti-pastoral poetry of two male Irish poets, Francis Harvey and Cathal Ó Searcaigh. Both share a common landscape of inspiration in their work: rural Donegal, the northernmost county of Ireland in the province of Ulster. Harvey and Ó Searcaigh converge in terms of poetic landscape and diverge in terms of language: Harvey wrote in English, while Ó Searcaigh is best-known as an Irish-language poet. The anti-pastoral will be discussed in terms of two poems, ‘Sheepmen’ by Harvey and ‘Caoradóir’ by Ó Searcaigh, translated into English by the poet as ‘Sheepman’. This study is situated within the field of ecocriticism, a theoretical approach that explores the environmental and other-than-human aspects of texts. Reading the common antipastoral theme of these poems will elucidate some complexities of conducting ecocritical analyses of Irish texts in this largely Anglo-American theoretical field.
