Abstrakt: TiB2 reinforcing particles have a high tendency to segregate to Al grain boundaries, resulting in heterogeneous properties of casting composites. Additive manufacturing (AM) using Al-Cu-Mg-Sc-TiB2 (Al2618-Sc-TiB2) composite powders overcomes the problem, resulting in a combination of high strength and high ductility. The segregation of TiB2 particles is avoided by their enhanced ability in nucleating Al grains that are refined exponentially in AM. Meanwhile, nanoparticles of intermetallics are produced inside the refined Al grains instead of networks along the Al grain boundaries in castings. The nanoparticles strengthen the composite with the TiB2 particles synergistically, overcoming the strength–ductility trade-off. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
