This review is the result of a search and synthesis of previously published material on methods of production of microcrystalline cellulose and their applications in the pharmaceutical industry. Classical and new methods of preparation of wood microcrystalline cellulose are outlined, among them several variants of acid hydrolysis or enzymatic hydrolysis. This review gives examples of the use of microcrystalline cellulose in pharmaceutical industry as an independent medicine, as a sorbent, and as a raw material for the synthesis of materials for tissue engineering.
