The article discusses what the UK Labour Party can learn from the United States about industrial strategy. It highlights the US approach, which involves a strategic state investing in key sectors and implementing place-based policies at scale. The US has introduced several Acts, such as the CHIPS and Science Act and the Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act, to balance markets and competition and promote self-sufficiency. The article suggests that Labour should develop a better relationship with local government, invest at scale, and align higher education policies with industrial and regional strategies. It also emphasizes the importance of a place-based focus and targeting struggling communities. However, the article acknowledges that Labour may face challenges in sticking to fiscal rules and avoiding accusations of high borrowing and spending. [Extracted from the article] |
