A new study from Herlev and Gentofte Hospital in Denmark examines the short- and long-term mortality rates for patients with and without a cancer diagnosis following pulmonary embolism. The study analyzed data from 2000 to 2020 and found that the 30-day mortality rate for patients without recent cancer decreased from 19.1% in 2000 to 7.3% in 2018-2020. Similarly, the 30-day mortality rate for patients with recent cancer decreased from 32.2% to 14.1%. However, the 31-365 day mortality rate for patients with recent cancer remained stable, while there was a minor improvement for patients without recent cancer. Overall, the study suggests improvements in short-term mortality following pulmonary embolism, regardless of cancer status, but limited improvement in long-term mortality for patients with recent cancer.
