Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) examined the use of prescription opioids among members of the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP), which provides healthcare to individuals affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The study found that opioid prescriptions among WTCHP members were primarily dispensed for cancer-related pain, hospice/end of life care, surgery pain, and acute/chronic pain. The study also noted that efforts to improve opioid prescribing within the program have coincided with positive outcomes, but ongoing surveillance is still necessary. This research provides valuable insights into the use of opioids within a specific population and highlights the need for continued monitoring and improvement in prescribing practices.
