A recent study conducted by Columbia University Irving Medical Center explores the use of machine learning algorithms to identify patients with heart failure who are at high risk of medication non-adherence. The researchers established an electronic health record (EHR)-based cohort with comprehensive data elements from multiple sources, including pharmacy refill data and social determinants of health data. The study included over 39,000 patients with heart failure and found that the majority of patients had active prescriptions for guideline-directed medication therapies. The researchers plan to develop a machine learning model to predict medication adherence and validate their findings with data from another hospital system in New York City.
