Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by the University of Ioannina in Greece aimed to identify biomarkers for detecting different metabolic health states in children with and without obesity. The study assessed the serum levels of metabolic regulators and vascular indices in 78 children. The results showed that both metabolically unhealthy groups, including children with normal weight and overweight/obesity, exhibited altered lipid and glucose homeostasis. The study found that higher levels of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) were associated with the metabolically unhealthy state in children with normal weight, while increased levels of leptin were associated with the metabolically unhealthy subgroup in overweight/obese children. The findings suggest that FGF21 and leptin may serve as early indicators of metabolic health in children. [Extracted from the article]
