A recent report from the University Veracruzana in Mexico discusses the detection of Bartonella bovis DNA in blood samples from a veterinarian in Mexico. Bartonella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria that can infect a wide range of mammals, including humans. This study is the first to report the transmission of B. bovis to animal health workers in Latin America through needlestick transmission.
