A recent report from Istanbul Medipol University in Turkey highlights an outbreak of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, a Gram-negative bacteria, in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The outbreak affected 12 patients, all of whom presented with S. maltophilia-associated bloodstream infections. Through DNA analysis, researchers identified the pull-out faucet in the PICU as the origin of the outbreak. The study emphasizes the importance of water surveillance in preventing bacterial overgrowth and recommends regular monitoring of water sources in healthcare settings. [Extracted from the article] |
