New research from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Hubei, China focuses on liver cancer metastasis. The study found that a long non-coding RNA called LINC01980 is upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and is associated with poor overall survival. LINC01980 promotes HCC metastasis by enhancing the expression of E2F5 through competitive binding with miR-376b-5p, leading to epithelial-mesenchymal transition and increased migration and invasion of HCC cells. The activation of LINC01980 is mediated by the TGF-beta/SMAD signaling pathway. The researchers suggest that LINC01980 could serve as a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC.
