Abstrakt: A new report from Mendel University Brno in the Czech Republic explores the impact of zinc oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles on Escherichia coli (E. coli). The study found that extended exposure to zinc led to major alterations in E. coli biology and resulted in multi-drug resistance. The researchers conducted phenotypic and multi-omics analyses of E. coli exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of zinc and found that zinc exposure caused significant changes in cell transcripts and proteins related to antibiotic response, heat stress, growth regulation, cell shape, and biofilm formation. The findings suggest that the use of zinc compounds as fertilizers and feed additives may have unintended consequences on bacteria. [Extracted from the article]
