Abstrakt: This paper depicts an experimental model for investigating the mechanism and nature of chip formation during the machining of Zinc-Aluminium alloy-based SiC reinforced mono and SIC and graphite reinforced hybrid metal matrix composites. The stir casting process is followed for the fabrication of both categories of composites. The morphology of the fabricated specimen tells the uniform distribution of reinforcing particles. Machining trials are done on mono and hybrid composites using coated carbide tool. The chips produced during the machining process are carefully collected and examined for their nature and shape. It is concluded that mono composite materials show lengthier chips than hybrid composite materials. The machining parameters and material composition influence the chip formation process. Due to retained ductility in the mono composites, lengthier chips are produced and hybrid composite being more brittle than mono composite material produces short segmental chips.
