Abstrakt: Dalip Kaur Tiwana's novelistic oeuvre provides a penetrating insight into the socio-cultural life of Punjab. As a regional writer, she has attempted to cover various aspect of the everyday transactions in the times of profound economic changes post-independence. The rural mindset grappling with this shift from the feudal economy to a capitalist one is captured through a special kind of feminist consciousness. Men are the marginalized figures; the women characters raise significant questions. The journey of Tiwana's characters from being "female" characters to becoming 'women' characters, the emergence of a newer, freer self, forms the subject matter of the three novels under study the narratives of women's lives - that Tiwana's novels unfold-effectively reflect the transition from the ethos of the joint family system to an individualistic understanding of the self. The genre she uses is that of the realist novel -- providing us with an insight into the lives of men and women of the Patiala region. These texts correlate very well with Fredric Jameson's idea of a national allegory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
