A study published in Epilepsia examined the risk and predictors of long-term unprovoked seizures after status epilepticus (SE). The study found that 30.3% of participants with a first SE episode and no history of epilepsy experienced unprovoked seizures during a median follow-up of 1.8 years. Factors such as progressive symptomatic etiology, delayed treatment initiation, and superrefractory SE increased the risk of seizure recurrence, while older age and acute symptomatic etiology decreased the risk. The study also highlighted the importance of considering distinct etiological subcategories in predicting the risk of post-SE epilepsy. [Extracted from the article] |
