This article discusses a case study of a 70-year-old male patient who presented with a right inguinal hernia and was scheduled for surgery. However, during the required examinations, a rare finding was revealed on his chest x-ray. The article also provides information about the historical use of asbestos and its properties. It further discusses the prevalence of pleural calcifications and malignant pleural mesothelioma in the region of Metsovo, Greece, due to non-occupational exposure to asbestos. The study suggests a correlation between the dose of soil exposure and the development of pleural calcifications. Similar findings have been reported in other regions of Greece.
