An approach is presented for carrying out the reliability-based design of a wind tunnel model and a hinge moment balance. The goal is to design the wind tunnel model to match the stiffness characteristics of the isolated tail while satisfying strength-based risk/reliability requirements and to have a good hinge moment balance that be able to produce a correct and valid data from the measurement. Wind tunnel model is an integral part of the development program for all aircraft manufacturers. The wind tunnel data will be used to predict the aerodynamics characteristics of the development or modified aircraft. The isolated tail model will be used for this wind tunnel testing is scale downed 1:4.4 from the full scale aircraft, the scale is determined by the test section area of ILST. Accuracy and repeatability data are two important variables that strongly affected by wind tunnel models. When the design is doing, some criteria's such as surface coordinate, stiffness and strength must be caried out into a consideration in order to get an accurate, repeat data and safe model. The hinge moment balance for this isolated model is designed by considering the maximum load at the hinge based on Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation and previous wind tunnel data test. A 700 N maximum load is applied to design to know the strength of the hinge. A stress analysis software is used to know the load distribution on the flexure of the hinge where the strain gauge sensor will be attached to measure load of the hinge during the wind tunnel test. The stress analysis described the maximum load up to 144.5 MPa is occurred in the flexure with the SS304 material and maximum load 144.87 MPa is occurred if the material is Al 7075. One of these two type of materials will be chosen as material of the hinge moment balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
