The article discusses the concept of moral distress (MD) experienced by healthcare professionals when they feel psychological or emotional unease but are unable to intervene or adopt a different approach. Examples of MD include situations during the COVID-19 pandemic where healthcare professionals felt they had inadequate personal protective equipment, suboptimal care due to insufficient resources or staffing, and when families were denied access to dying relatives. Sustained MD can lead to moral injury, which manifests as impaired function or prolonged psychological harm. The article suggests that awareness of MD and moral injury should be increased among healthcare professionals, and structural and organizational changes should be made to mitigate the effects of MD.
