The conditions for the development of the orange-coloured complex between molybdenum salts and alkali thiocyanates have been examined. As a result of these examinations modifications of the methods using this reaction for the determination of molybdenum are described. The role of iron in this reaction has been examined and the nature of the iron effect is discussed. A number of other elements have been examined for similar effects on the molybdenum-thiocyanate complex and it is pointed out that, of those examined, only copper seems to be capable of causing any similar intensification of colour. The interference of titanium is discussed. Determinations are reproducible to within 3 p.c., between the range of 0.5 to 40 micrograms of molybdenum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
