Abstrakt: Air foil bearings which operate without an external supply of air are called hydrodynamically operated bearings. These bearings are used in high speed and low load applications. The lubricating medium used as air. These bearings can be used in place of oil bearings. As the need for this type of bearings, where there is a problem with environmental conditions like high temperature, dust and need for food processing machines. But these bearings are unable carry high load at lower speeds, due to which it is very difficult use such bearings in high load applications. The present paper focus on the ability to carry load by air foil thrust bearing, which can be used for different applications by the use of different foil materials. Basically the properties of materials like stiffness and damping characteristics will have effect on load carrying capabilities to understand this effect different foil materials on load carrying capabilities has considered. The various foil materials like brass, steel and bronze has been selected. The important parameter considered to study the performance of foil bearing is load carrying capacity and also stiffness has been evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
