A research study conducted by Hirosaki University Graduate School of Medicine examined a case of bilateral simultaneous endophthalmitis, a severe eye infection, following immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS). The patient, a 75-year-old woman undergoing anticancer treatment, experienced vision loss in both eyes after the surgery. Treatment included anterior chamber irrigation, posterior capsulotomy, and vitrectomy, resulting in improved visual acuity. The research highlights the importance of following accepted protocols for ISBCS, such as complete aseptic separation of the patient's two procedures, to prevent complications like endophthalmitis.
