A recent study conducted at the University of Lagos in Nigeria examined the indications, diagnosis, and complications of tracheostomy procedures performed over a 10-year period in a tertiary hospital. The study found that relief of upper airway obstruction from neoplasms was the most common reason for tracheostomy, followed by trauma. Among pediatric patients with upper airway obstruction, infections and foreign body inhalation were the primary diagnoses. The most common complication was peristomal granulation tissue. This research provides valuable insights into the patterns and outcomes of tracheostomy procedures in South Western Nigeria. [Extracted from the article] |
