A study conducted by the University of Massachusetts examined the prevalence and predictors of shared decision-making in goals-of-care clinician-family meetings for critically ill neurological patients. The researchers analyzed 72 audio-recorded meetings from seven US hospitals and used a validated instrument to measure the extent of shared decision-making in each meeting. The study found that fewer than 10% of meetings contained all shared decision-making elements, highlighting gaps in this process. The researchers suggest that interventions promoting shared decision-making may improve patient-value congruent care, and further studies should explore their impact on decision quality and surrogates' health outcomes.
