A recent study conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Pediatria has found that rabeprazole, a drug commonly used to treat ulcers, shows promise as a potential treatment for American trypanosomiasis, a disease that primarily affects populations in Latin America. The study found that rabeprazole inhibits the activity of triosephosphate isomerase, an enzyme in the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite that causes the disease. The researchers observed that rabeprazole was 14.5 times more effective than the current chemotherapy drug, benznidazole. These findings suggest that rabeprazole could be a valuable candidate for the treatment of American trypanosomiasis. [Extracted from the article] |
