A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center explored the goals of patients receiving medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). The study involved in-depth interviews with patients enrolled in opioid treatment programs across Tennessee. The participants described goal setting in three stages of treatment: addressing acute physical and emotional needs, developing supportive structures and routines, and identifying and pursuing future-focused goals. The study found that goals are transitory and relative to the stage of treatment, highlighting the need for further research to understand goal evolution and its impact on treatment retention.
