A recent study conducted by Geisinger in Danville, Pennsylvania, explored the use of web-based conversational agents, known as chatbots, to facilitate communication about familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a genetic condition that causes high cholesterol levels. The study found that older individuals were more likely to opt out of using the chatbots, while most participants preferred receiving the chatbots through the patient electronic health record (EHR) portal. The study also revealed that reminders increased engagement with the chatbots. Overall, the findings suggest that integrating chatbots into the patient EHR portal and utilizing reminders can improve the utilization of innovative digital health technology for facilitating family communication about hereditary conditions like FH.
