Abstrakt: A recent study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery explores the history and use of dexamethasone, a widely used medication in neurosurgery. The researchers discuss how dexamethasone was initially synthesized for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis but was later applied to neurosurgery by a resident named Joseph Galicich. The drug was found to improve symptoms, resolve midline shift, and decrease mortality rates in patients who had undergone tumor removal. However, with the emergence of neuro-oncological immunotherapies, the immunosuppressive effects of dexamethasone are now seen as unwanted. The study suggests that further research is needed to find alternative ways to treat symptomatic edema in the context of modern neuro-oncological therapies. [Extracted from the article]
