"Islam, réforme et colonisation: Une histoire de l'ibadisme en Algérie (1882–1962)" by Augustin Jomier is a micro-history of Algeria's Mzab region during the colonial period. The book explores the transformations in religious representations and practices as factors in political legitimization and as vehicles for new social norms under colonial domination. It focuses on the Ibadi community, a minority group within the Maliki Sunni majority in Algeria, and examines their history from the pre-colonial period to the post-independence era. The book highlights the role of Ibadi intellectuals in shaping their own history and their efforts to redefine their community in the face of colonialism. It also emphasizes the transnational networks and exchanges that influenced the spread of reformist ideas among the Ibadi community. This book provides valuable insights into the history of Algeria, colonization, and Muslim reformism. [Extracted from the article] |
