A new study from the United Kingdom has found that an artificial intelligence (AI) model can detect the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, with 100% accuracy. The AI also detected over 99% of all skin cancers. The researchers tested the AI by integrating it into the clinical diagnosis process, envisioning a future where AI can help doctors catch skin cancer faster and prioritize patients. While there are concerns about the shortage of dermatologists, the AI system in this study saved over 1,000 face-to-face consultations, allowing dermatologists to catch more cancers and serve more patients. However, the study's limitations include a small sample size and the need for the AI to improve in ruling out benign lesions. Overall, if AI software proves accurate in larger and more diverse sample sizes, it could be a valuable tool for triage in dermatology. [Extracted from the article] |
