The clinical features of the various types of oral infection in adults which may be caused by the herpes group of viruses are described. These are primary herpetic stomatitis, herpes labialis, recurrent intra-oral herpes simplex infection, chicken pox and zoster. The cytological changes in the epithelial cells are described and discussed. Different changes are induced by giant-cell and proliferative strains of Herpesvirus hominis: both strains can be isolated from all clinical infections. The diagnostic value of cytological smears in oral infections is emphasized and 6 illustrative cases are reported. Several smears should be made from each case as relatively few cells may be affected and as the cytological changes may be difficult to detect when the cells are degenerate and when only changes due to the proliferative strain are present. Evidence is presented for the increasing susceptibility of adults, including medical personnel, to primary infection with Herpesvirus hominis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
