This article discusses the endoscopic treatment of Zenker's diverticulum, a rare condition characterized by a sac-like outpouching in the throat. The symptoms of Zenker's diverticulum depend on its size and can include dysphagia, regurgitation, halitosis, and a blocking sensation in the throat. Diagnostic modalities include upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and barium swallow study. The most common endoscopic treatment for Zenker's diverticulum is endoscopic septotomy, but this procedure is associated with a high recurrence rate. A newer technique called Zenker peroral endoscopic myotomy (Z-POEM) has shown promise in reducing recurrence by completely dividing the septum. Larger studies are needed to establish the safety and effectiveness of Z-POEM. [Extracted from the article] |
