Retained metallic foreign bodies in the mediastinum after penetrating trauma are not commonly seen in children. Penetrating injuries to the mediastinum can be life-threatening and require early intervention in most cases. We report a rare case of penetrating mediastinal trauma with a foreign body retained in the anterior mediastinum. The patient was a 12-year-old male child who sustained an injury while fiddling with an air compressor machine. The metallic nut (part of the nut bolt) from the machine penetrated the sternum and was lodged in the pericardial fat in the anterior mediastinum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
