Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) examined the epidemiology and outcomes of emergency department (ED) visits in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The study utilized the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) and found that SLE patients have a higher likelihood of frequent ED visits. The study also revealed variations in ED visits by age and race, with a higher proportion of Black and Hispanic SLE patients in the youngest age category. Additionally, the study identified differences in comorbidity patterns based on race, with White patients having higher rates of hyperlipidemia and ischemic heart disease, while Black patients had higher rates of chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and heart failure. The research concluded that infection and SLE/connective tissue disease were the most prevalent primary diagnoses associated with ED visits and inpatient admission. However, despite comprising a significant proportion of SLE ED visits, Black patients had lower odds of admission. The study suggests that further research is needed to understand the factors contributing to these disparities, including differences in insurance coverage and potential socioeconomic biases among healthcare providers.
