A recent study conducted at the Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behaviour examined the effectiveness and tolerability of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder or bipolar depression. The study found that ECT could be a viable treatment option for depressed adolescents and young adults, with similar effectiveness to older adults and even superior tolerability in the younger group. The study also noted that major depressive disorder and bipolar depression are prevalent and significant contributors to the global burden of disease, but effective interventions for these conditions are limited.
