A study conducted by researchers at Soochow University in Suzhou, China, has investigated the potential effects of Folic Acid (FA) on chronic visceral pain, specifically related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The study found that chronic visceral hyperalgesia, induced in rats by neonatal colonic inflammation, increased the abundance of Clostridiales bacteria and hydrogen sulfide production in the intestines. Additionally, the concentration of FA was significantly decreased in IBS patients compared to non-IBS subjects. However, FA supplementation alleviated chronic visceral pain in rats and reduced the frequency of synaptic transmission in the spinal dorsal horn. The study suggests that FA treatment may attenuate chronic visceral pain by reducing hydrogen sulfide production from Clostridiales in the intestine. [Extracted from the article] |
