A study conducted in Burkina Faso has found that wastewater from healthcare centers in the country is a source of multidrug-resistant bacteria, including carbapenemase producers. The study collected 84 wastewater samples from five healthcare centers and found that ESBL-producing bacteria were present in 97.6% of the samples. The bacteria were resistant to multiple antibiotics, including all tested β-lactams. The researchers concluded that untreated healthcare wastewater entering the environment poses a public health threat, particularly in resource-poor settings. [Extracted from the article] |
