Abstrakt: A recent report from the University of Energy and Natural Resources discusses the issue of non-adherence to ivermectin treatment in onchocerciasis-endemic communities in the Bono Region of Ghana. The World Health Organization aims to eliminate onchocerciasis transmission in 12 endemic countries by 2030, and the strategy involves mass drug administration of ivermectin. However, the study found that a relatively high level of non-adherence to treatment was observed, with reasons including fear of side effects, absence during treatment, pregnancy, desire to drink alcohol, and challenges in drug distribution. The researchers recommend targeted educational and behavioral change campaigns to address this issue and ensure progress towards onchocerciasis elimination targets in Ghana.
