Abstrakt: The book "La domination comme expérience européenne et américaine à l'époque moderne" edited by David Chaunu and Séverin Duc explores the various forms of domination exerted by European monarchs in the 16th and 17th centuries. The book is a collection of contributions from a conference held at the Sorbonne in 2017, organized by Chaunu and Duc. The contributors examine the relationship between European powers and overseas territories, as well as the domination of specific groups within populations. The book highlights the complexity and variability of domination, as well as its violent aspects. It also explores the role of imagination and legitimation in the exercise of domination. The book suggests that domination was driven by economic motives, particularly the colonization of America for the exploitation of resources and labor. Domination also involved the organization of space and activity, with the transposition of European structures and norms overseas. The book concludes by calling for further research on the concept of domination and its relationship to obedience in Ancien Regime society. [Extracted from the article]
