Two cases of turban tumour are described. Both were treated by removal of the tumour-bearing areas of the scalp followed by Thiersch grafting. The large tumours scattered over the body in one case were excised. The histological pictures of Brooke's disease and turban tumour are identical except for the membrane surrounding the clumps of tumour cells in the latter disease. This membrane is probably composed of a glyco-protein or glyeo-lipoid secreted by the tumour cells. X-ray treatment, with doses just sufficient to cure basal cell carcinoma, severely disorganized the tumours but did not cure them. Five months after treatment the tumours were beginning to recover their normal histological appearance. An experiment to test for the presence of cutaneous carcinogens in the tumours was carried out with extracts of the tumours painted on to mice. No malignant tumours occurred but pre-malignant changes were seen. Subsequently experimental and control mice from this experiment were exposed to large doses of ultra-violet light and again pre-cancerous changes were seen but no malignant tumours appeared. It is suggested that turban tumours may be naevoid in origin and arise in cell rests from the stratum germination of the foetus in those cells which would normally form apocrine glands.
