Researchers from the Federal University of Ceara in Brazil have conducted a study on the structural properties and anticancer potential of a mannose-specific lectin found in Canavalia villosa seeds. Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that play a role in cell-cell recognition and programmed cell death. The researchers determined the lectin's fine carbohydrate-binding specificity and found that it exhibited an antiproliferative effect against cancer cell lines. This effect was dependent on the lectin's carbohydrate-binding activity and its uptake in the cells, leading to the activation of autophagic and apoptotic pathways. [Extracted from the article] |
