The volute is one of the key components which improves the performance of a centrifugal compressor. It has a strong influence in bringing improvements in stage efficiency as well as operating conditions. The present work focuses on finding the effect of volute cross-section shape on the performance of a single-stage centrifugal compressor working under the same impeller geometry, vaneless diffuser, mass flow rate, and speed. The study is mainly carried out in four different volutes namely: Circular cross-section with ellipse ratio 1 (Symmetrical inlet), a circular cross-section with ellipse ratio 1 (Tangential inlet), an elliptical cross-section with ellipse ratio 0.75 (Symmetrical inlet), and an elliptical cross-section with ellipse ratio 0.75 (Tangential inlet). The computational simulations carried out in ANSYS CFX revealed that a Circular cross-section with a tangential inlet is more efficient than the other three. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
