A study conducted at Valme University Hospital in Seville, Spain, explored the use of levator ani muscle (LAM) avulsion assessment in the diagnosis of uterine prolapse (UP). The study included 145 patients and found that adding LAM avulsion criteria to the standard ultrasound protocol for diagnosing UP increased sensitivity in the general population, as well as in premenopausal and postmenopausal patients. However, the standard technique showed higher specificity. The research concluded that implementing LAM avulsion assessment in the ultrasound diagnosis of UP is useful in postmenopausal patients, improving sensitivity and specificity.
