A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama Birmingham investigated whether leptin resistance, a condition associated with obesity, occurs in children at risk for obesity due to exposure to maternal obesity or gestational diabetes. The study involved 179 mother-child pairs and found that leptin resistance was more prevalent in children with a higher body mass index (BMI), but it did not differ based on in utero exposure. Similarly, leptin resistance in women was associated with weight status and not prior gestational diabetes. The study suggests that leptin concentrations are associated with obesity but not the risk for obesity based on in utero exposure. [Extracted from the article] |
