Abstrakt: This article discusses Tamara Lanier's fight to gain control of historic photographs of enslaved people that are currently held by Harvard's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. The photographs, known as daguerreotypes, were taken in 1850 by a group of white men who wanted to support the theory of polygenesis. Lanier believes that two of the individuals in the photographs, Renty and Delia, are her ancestors. However, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that descendants cannot obtain possession of artifacts resulting from their ancestors' enslavement. Lanier's goal is not ownership, but rather to reclaim the story and reveal the brutality and humanity depicted in the photographs. [Extracted from the article]
