The Dog Aging Project is a large-scale study focused on understanding the factors that affect dogs' aging and their quality of life. With over 50,000 participating dogs, the project aims to collect as much information as possible to analyze how biology and environment shape healthy aging. The study, based at the University of Washington, involves academic experts, veterinarians, and citizen scientists who volunteer information about their dogs every year. By following these dogs throughout their lives, the project hopes to make connections to human aging and improve both canine and human health longevity. The project also includes various studies, such as genetic associations, epigenomic studies, and a trial of the anti-aging drug rapamycin. The study has already yielded interesting findings, including the debunking of long-held ideas about breed-specific personality traits and the importance of dogs' social lives for their healthspan. The project is open to dogs of all ages and breeds in the United States, with plans to expand internationally. [Extracted from the article] |
