A recent research article published in Angewandte Chemie by Rachel C. Evans et al. explores the use of ultra-small nanoparticle probes for anti-Stokes fluorescence lifetime imaging in living cells. The researchers designed these probes using triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) chromophores encapsulated in an organic-inorganic ureasil host. The study demonstrates that these nanoparticles can be used to map local oxygen diffusion across the subcellular structure, as evidenced by fluctuations in the upconversion lifetime in stained cells.
