Abstrakt: This article presents information on the criteria of immunological tolerance to tissue antigens. Fresh surgical specimens of human renal carcinoma and adjacent normal kidney were used without pooling with specimens from other patients to avoid the complication of individual antigenic differences. Material was grossly separated into normal kidney, tumor, and marginal tissue comprising both normal and tumor. Immunodiffusion, which has sometimes been the only method employed, cannot detect non-diffusible antigens or non-precipitating reactions. Immunofluorescence overcomes these deficiencies and, in the present study, permitted the demonstration of diverse immunological responsiveness in rabbits presumptively tolerant by immunodiffusion tests.
