Abstrakt: A study conducted by the University of Leuven in Belgium explored the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on patients with unilateral diaphragm dysfunction (UDD). UDD is an underdiagnosed cause of dyspnea, and IMT is the only conservative treatment available. The study found that IMT led to improvements in dyspnea, exercise tolerance, and respiratory muscle function in patients with UDD. These improvements were not solely due to an improvement in diaphragm function, but may also be attributed to enhancements in strength, coordination, and oxygenation of the extra-diaphragmatic respiratory muscles.
