Researchers from Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona have published a case report on an unusual presentation of neonatal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). The report describes the case of a full-term infant who presented at birth with a large midline facial mass and smaller masses in the head and neck, as well as multiple flesh-colored nodules on the limbs. The infant was diagnosed with congenital alveolar RMS, a rare form of the most common soft tissue sarcoma in childhood. The initial treatment included chemotherapy drugs, but the infant ultimately relapsed and passed away at 5 months of age. The researchers also discuss the limited literature available on this rare condition and newer treatment regimens with improved mortality rates. [Extracted from the article] |
