A recent study from Dalhousie University in Canada explores the challenge of preventing the diversion of controlled substances in perioperative settings. Perioperative environments, such as operating rooms and recovery units, are at high risk for diversion due to the frequent handling of controlled substances with varying levels of oversight. The study reviews strategies for preventing diversion, including education, distribution, auditing, and provider screening. However, there is limited evidence to determine the optimal approach, and anesthesia departments will need to collaborate with hospital pharmacies to select strategies that are reasonable given local resources.
